National Holidays
Saint Lazarus Day
Saint Lazarus day is a venerated celebration for believers throughout Cuba. Every December 17, devotees from almost every province undertake a long and sometimes rigorous journey to the Saint Lazarus National Sanctuary - located in the town of El Rincon, right on the outskirts of Havana. Those who seek blessings by giving offerings to the saint can be seen walking barefoot or on their knees towards the sanctuary, holding candles or miniature figurines of the saint.
Saint Barbara Day
Aside from Saint Lazarus, celebrating the Catholic patron Saint Barbara is of equal importance, not just for Cuban culture but around the globe. For spiritists, St. Barbara is known as changó - a powerful Oricha spirit also called the King of Oyó. Each December 4th, followers wear red clothing to honor the saint, and many set up candle-lit altars in their households for adoration.
Christmas and New Year in Cuba
Christmas and New Year's in Cuba follow many of the same traditions celebrated worldwide - the lighting of Christmas trees, exchanging of presents, and don't forget the alcohol. However, what you will find distinct is the traditional roasting of pork, the preparation of classic Cuban dishes, as you'll read further, and instead of eggnog, toast away the old year with a Cuba Libre.

Best Places to Visit in December
Loma de la Cruz
Sitting 261 meters above sea level overlooking the city of Holguin, the Mount of the Cross easily offers the city's best view. This is the ideal place to relax from the busy city streets and appreciate the natural surroundings with a chilled breeze on your face. Loma de la Cruz is also the exact location from where Pope Francis blessed the region during his visit in 2015.
Plaza del Carmen
A beautiful open space within the city of Camaguey for a relaxing pause after touring the city, which in December has a favorable climate, Plaza del Carmen is an excellent spot to indulge in some people-watching. Also located in the plaza is the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church, which serves as a delightful backdrop to the area. Bronze statues and large copper pots adorn the space, giving you a feeling of always being in good company when no one is around.
The Shrine of Monserrate
The Shrine of Monserrate was built in 1874, employing the neoclassical architectural style of the day. Its placement was well thought out, as it gives visitors a vantage point from which to see the Valley of Yumurí, the river of San Juan, and the city of Matanzas.
This structure, which dates back to the colonial era, represents the Spanish legacy still alive in Cuban culture, resembling 19th-century oratoriums from Spain. Nearby you'll find plenty of recreational activities and various Cuban cuisine options for every visitor.

Seasonal Fruits
During this festive month, the Cuban people prefer slightly sweet or even sour fruits. The flavorful fruta bomba or papaya is incorporated in milkshakes, rum fruit cocktails, and juices for holiday dinners.
The toronja or grapefruit, used to make tarts and jam, is the perfect compliment to your rum cocktail for its intense, tangy, and bittersweet taste. And for those wanting to try something more exotic, the spikey guanábana or soursop fruit is best consumed naturally, combining the texture of cacao fruit with an orangey refreshing flavor.
