City Guide: Cienfuegos

Cienfuegos is a picturesque coastal town with laid back charm known as Cuba's Pearl Of The South. Top drawcards include the historic city center and nearby beaches.

Located along the shores of an immense natural bay, Cienfuegos, known in Cuba as The Pearl Of The South, is a meticulously well-preserved city that lies just four hours south of Havana. Complemented by striking colonial architecture and quiet cobblestone streets, the magic of Cienfuegos is captured by the juxtaposition of its natural surroundings.

To the east, the Escambray mountain range stretches far beyond the horizon, while to the immediate south, a few moments from the city center, gentle Caribbean waves lap against the shores of the bay. The raw majesty of nature couldn’t be any more alive.

Upon arrival at Cienfuegos, you’ll be greeted by a billboard that quotes lyrics by Benny Moré, a legend of 50’s Cuban Bolero and Son Monuto music. Having recorded a hit track with the city’s name as its title, Morés’ enthusiasm for all things Cienfuegos couldn’t have been any clearer: “The city I like the most”; a widely shared sentiment expressed by one of Cuba’s most celebrated voices.

Top attractions in Cienfuegos

José Marti Park

Officially declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005, José Marti Park is a picturesque setting and the best spot if you need a quick break from the midday sun. Located in the historic center of the city, the site is blessed with towering palm trees that are generously dotted amongst statues and water fountains. Make sure you check out the prestigious Arch of Triumph, a monument constructed as a tribute to Cubans who fell during the three liberation wars of the nineteenth century, the last of which being the Cuban War Of Independence fought from 1895 to 1898.

Tomás Terry theater

A renowned cultural symbol across the country, Cienfuegos’ 950 seat auditorium resonates elegance and sophistication thanks to its classy marble features and exquisite ceiling mural. Built in 1889 to honor the life of Tomás Terry, a Venezeluen born Cuban industrialist who at his death was regarded as one of the richest men in world, the theater has hosted international artists from a golden age of Latin music, such as Jorge Negrete, Joan Manuel Serrat, and Alicia Alonso.

The Tomás Terry theater hosts performances throughout the year and offers guided tours for as little as 3 USD between 10am - 6pm. We highly suggest you swing by and experience a fascinating era of performance art that’s been lost to the modern world.

Paseo del Prado

Regarded as the longest street on the island, the Paseo del Prado begins at the entrance to Cienfuegos, just a short stroll from the El Inglés river, and finishes in Punta Gorda at the southern end of the city. Take your time to wander along its radiant central walkway and absorb the rhyme of daily life in Cienfuegos while appreciating the contrast between the pastel-colored buildings and the gorgeous turquoise blue of the Caribbean sea. At its intersection with Avenue 54, you will encounter the life-size, bronze statue of Benny Moré. Grab your camera and steal a photo with one of Cuba’s most iconic musicians.

Palacio de Valle

Constructed in 1917, el Palacio de Valle delivers an essence of southern Spain right to the heart of the Caribbean, thanks to its Moorish-inspired architecture that features deep-colored roof tiles, impressive turrets, and distinctive stucco walls. Originally home to a wealthy Cuban merchant, the palace is open to the public seven days per week and boasts one of Cienfuegos’ finest restaurants in addition to a roof terrace and bar.

Once you’ve explored the site and appreciated the intriguing Hispano-Moorish mosaics, take time to unwind in the palace’s lush garden surroundings and sample some of Cienfuegos’ finest seafood. The palace’s restaurant offers an extensive menu; however, we recommend local specialties such as Cuban ajiaco or tamale casserole. Ask the staff, and they will be more than happy to accommodate your requests.

Things to do in Cienfuegos

Rancho Luna Beach

If you’re looking to enjoy Cuba’s rich marine biodiversity, Cienfuegos is the perfect choice for scuba diving and snorkeling. Less than 20km from the city, Rancho Luna beach is home to one of Latin America’s most extensive coral reefs. Visitors to the area can rent a boat from one of the many companies that line the shore, and within 20 minutes, explore depths of up to 30km and discover an abundance of exotic marine wildlife.

Guanaroca Lagoon

That said, if you’re more inclined to keep your feet dry, Guanaroca Lagoon, just a few kilometers from the beach, is a beautiful spot to witness the flight of Cuba’s gorgeous pink flamingos. Formed by the water from the Guanaroca river as it flows towards the Bay of Cienfuegos, the lagoon is part of 2km squared of protected natural habitat and home to pelicans, pink flamingos, and trogons; a colorful, insect-eating bird that is native to Cuba. Boat tours operate between 8am - 3pm; however, we recommend arriving early to give yourself the best chance of seeing the wildlife before it moves out of the sun and into the shade of surrounding trees and river plants.

El Nicho Park (and beyond)

To complete the Cienfuegos experience, take time to explore the natural wonders of El Nicho park, which lies less than one hour away from the city. Further to the east, you will discover the city of Trinidad, an iconic location that is a must-visit when traveling along Cuba’s south coast.

Where to stay in Cienfuegos

Located in Punta Gorda, Hotel Jagua is a 4-star hotel that boasts spectacular views of the bay of Cienfuegos and the Escambray mountains. Its spacious rooms, elegant pool villas, and modern architecture complete a privileged setting, offering guests the perfect spot where they can wind down after a long day exploring the city. At sunset, grab a cocktail and take a stroll down the hotel’s promenade and witness some of the most memorable sunsets in the Caribbean.

How to get there

If you arrive at Havana’s international airport, you can easily make your way to Cienfuegos via the state transport agency Viazul which provides regular shuttles to the city for as little as 16USD. If you’re traveling on a tighter budget, transport can also be arranged with the private taxis waiting outside the airport, although a good level of Spanish will be essential to ensure you get the right price.

Where to Drink in Havana: Our Essential List of the Best Bars

El Floridita Bar in Havana

Visit the best bars in Havana for classic Cuban drinks with a modern twist!

When visiting the historic capital of Cuba, a classic bar in the center of town should be at the top of your itinerary. You'll have the opportunity to experience the many flavors that distinguish Cuban drinks in the Caribbean. The refreshing seasonal fruits, natural flavors without additives or fructose - as in the case of the Mojito, an internationally acclaimed fan favorite drink.

So, want to submerge yourself in an unforgettable experience, but don't know where to start? We've put together a list of the best bars in Havana for a unique tour of the city.

1. Bar Melodrama

It's 5pm on a Thursday, and it's your last day on the island without a place to create that final memorable send-off. If you're thinking ... live music, a friendly atmosphere, stylish decor, and a variety of Cuban drinks? you're thinking about El Melodrama! Where you can immerse yourself in Cuban culture on open mic night.

All you need is one of their famous "Cancháncharas," a honey infused Cuban cocktail of excellence with a mixture of rum and lemon. Followed by an order of special tapas like the Yuca Frita (fried cassava), a delicious natural side dish for any meal.

The Melodrama staff will be waiting for you everyday from 5pm to 1am, located at Obrapía 511, between Bernaza and Villegas St - with an estimated price of US $2 to US $5 per drink or plate.

2. Mojito Mojito

As its name suggests, this is the perfect location to engulf your senses with new variations of the famed drink. For an exotic touch, we recommend the Mojito de Fruta, a pleasant and invigorating concoction. Furthermore, you have the best runner-ups with the Cubata and Cuba Libre drinks - not forgetting of course, international classics like the Bloody Mary and Tequila Sunrise.

Mojito Mojito also serves as a bar-restaurant, for a healthy balance of cocktails and delectable Cuban foods like Criole fried pork, Ropa Vieja, or your pick of international options. You can expect to spend around US $2 to US $28, and it'll be worth every cent. Their doors are open from 11am to 11:45pm, waiting for you in Old Havana on Calle Muralla #166, on the corner of Cuba and San Ignacio.

3. El Floridita

An easy 'must' on your list - the Floridita is one of the most iconic bars in Cuba, and one of the reasons why is because of their tasty Daiquiris - making this Earnest Hemingway's bar of choice, where you'll be greeted by a life size version of the writer himself.

These days, you can try out the same cooling drink the way Papa (Hemingway) liked it - white rum, maraschino liqueur, lime, grapefruit juice, and no sugar. El Floiridita is in essence a time machine that transports you back to a golden era in Cuba with its Regency style decorations. If you wish to finish off your vacation with nostalgia and elegance, this is just the bar for you.

You can find them up and running at 11am, and closes at midnight - located right in front of the famous Obispo boulevard, on the corner of Monserrate!

4. Yarini Habana

The Yarini's ample terrace, from which you'll take in the greater part of Havana, makes this venue an ideal chill-out spot from the often hectic crowds. This bar-restaurant is a haven for live musicians and book presentations.  Its tropical cocktails like El Mangón (mango drink), allow for an authentic taste of the Caribbean.  And if you happen to stop by, you'll have a chance to sip on the notorious drink El Rey (the king) - inspired by Alberto Yarini “The King of San Isidro”- known as Cuba’s most legendary pimp and racketeer.

Are you a lobster or pork tenderloin fan? Or maybe you have an appetite for something more diverse? You've chosen the right place.  The selection at Yarini plays with flavors and textures to create a harmonious culinary experience. They open at 4pm from Monday to Thursdays, and from 12pm on the weekends at San Isidro #214 between Picota and Compostela.

5. Bar-Café Madrigal

We now move along to another one of the most frequented city areas by visitors and locals alike, El Vedado Habanero. Situated at Calle 17 #809, between 2nd and 4th street, you'll find a welcoming environment illuminated by the dimly dressed lamps on each table. From its balcony, the contemporary Havana-style architecture can be appreciated while having any variety of drinks and tapas for all tastes - like the signature Caribbean Piña Colada and the ever-present tostones to snack on.

By day, the Bar-Cafe Madrigal is better known for its extraordinary coffee brew. With modest prices at US $2 to US $7, you can spend a fascinating evening in the Caribbean isle. They'll be waiting Tuesday through Sunday, from 6pm to 2am.

Top Four Jazz Clubs in Havana

Cuba’s capital has always enjoyed a lively jazz scene, and has produced legendary musicians. It’s time to visit Havana’s best jazz clubs!

In Cuba, music carries the beat of life. Havana, in particular, breathes music and trades in rhythm almost as much as it does in currency, which is why its live music scene is internationally renowned. In particular, Cuban jazz has earned a reputation for unique sounds, thanks to the way it organically combines traditional Latin instruments with avant-garde experiments.

Havana’s nightclub scene includes a vast array of jazz clubs. Out of them, we’ve handpicked the best options for live music and exotic cocktails.

Ecléctico Bar, Havana

Photo: Ecléctico Bar

Ecléctico Bar

Located in the heart of the boho Vedado neighborhood, surrounded by art galleries, restaurants, and historical landmarks, this bar always features as one of the best for jazz lovers.

Ecléctico Bar is located inside the Paseo 206 Boutique Hotel and offers the same simple yet romantic atmosphere as the hotel. Lights are warm and cozy, the furniture is authentically 1920s deco-inspired, and every Thursday night, its lineup includes consecrated local jazz artists like Arturo Sandoval (from the Grammy Award-winning Irakere combo) and violin expert William Roblejo.

You can also sample some of the best “bar snacks” in Cuba at these events. On top of the traditional chicharron (deep-fried pork rinds), they also offer many Italian-inspired fusion appetizers and a wide array of daiquiri blends.

When to find live jazz: Every Thursday, between 06:30 PM - 08:30 PM

Door fee: 500 CUP / 20 USD (includes a drink)

Where to go: Avenida Paseo 206, Plaza de la Revolución, La Habana, Cuba

La Zorra Y El Cuervo jazz club, Vedado, Havana

La Zorra Y El Cuervo

La Zorra Y El Cuervo (The Foxy lady and the Raven) is one of those old mythical spots where jazz history is written. Open from Thursdays through Sundays, the club usually opens at around 10 PM and stays open until dawn, making it an ideal place to waste the night away after a long, late dinner.

As it is located on the popular 23rd Street, also known as “La Rampa,” the club is easy to find and within walking distance of many top-ranked restaurants. As you ascend from the boardwalk, look out for a red phone booth – and step inside to enter the venue.

Inside, as if transported by Dr. Who, you’ll immediately find yourself in a typical 1920s speakeasy: refurbished vintage furniture, overfull shelves, dark lights, and a mojito in everyone’s hand.

When to come: Weekends, from 10:00 PM - 3:00 AM

Door fee: 250 CUP / 10 USD

Where to go: Northwest Calle 23/, Plaza de la Revolución, La Habana, Cuba

Miramar Cafe

The Miramar Cafe, located inside the former Miramar Cinema Club, is now one of the main hives for Cuban jazz lovers. Where the two clubs previously mentioned stick to the traditional scene, the Miramar privileges up-and-coming stars and younger patrons.

This is evident even in the club’s layout: its stage is located in the middle of the main lounge, allowing patrons and musicians to remain close and in constant communication while jamming.  During their famous jam sessions, it’s not unusual for visiting musicians to jump inside and join the night’s main guests in their improv set.

Add a postmodern, extremely casual, and cheeky vibe, and you get a unique and unrepeatable experience every weekend.

When to come: Weekends, from 10:00 PM - 3:00 AM

Door fee: 200 CUP / 8 USD

Where to go: 5ta Avenida, corner with 94, Playa, La Habana Cuba

Jazz Café

Likely the most traditional of all Havana’s Jazz clubs, the Jazz Cafe has earned the right to appropriate the genre’s name as its own. It is located on the top floor of the Galerías Paseo Shopping Centre, in the well-known Vedado neighborhood.

From Thursdays to Sundays, this spot will feature a continuous stream of jazz music, always crowned by a weekly jam session. Along its stage, top figures of the legendary Cuban jazz scene, such as Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, have left behind some of their best live recordings.

Plus, the wide windows opposite the stage offer a beautiful view of the sea, where the reflected stars and boats’ night lights oscillate almost to the beat of the music.

If you’re hungry, the Jazz Cafe will have you covered with a large, rotating assortment of tapas: this is also one of the best places for Cuban-Spanish fusion food.

When to come: 7:00 PM - 2:00 AM

Door fee: 250 CUP / 10 USD

Where to go: Avenida 1ra, corner with Paseo, Plaza de la Revolución, La Habana, Cuba
